LUMS Alumna, Mahwash Rehman, MBA class of 2002, who is an author and photographer, has recently launched her book titled ‘Women in Green and Beyond’ which pays a pictorial tribute to Pakistani women cricketers. Sheharyar Khan, Chairman PCB, Former Caretaker Finance Minister Salman Shah, Former PCB Chairman Women Wing Bushra Aitezaz and the Women Cricket team were present at the Launching ceremony.

Here is what Mahwash Rehman has to say about the project and how her education at LUMS contributed to her journey:

“MBA to Photography! How did that happen? This is a question I am asked all the time. To be honest, I never knew that I would end up in this field. Like most LUMS graduates, after graduating in 2002, I too started working in the corporate world, then went on to Cornell for coursework in Human Resources and did few consulting projects while I was in the U.S.

I first explored DSLR in 2008, which I bought on my way back to Pakistan. I took up photography seriously in 2010 when Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in Karachi offered its first ever PGD in Photography. That experience opened up the unexplored world of art to me, and I was awed by the fact that photography was such a powerful medium of expression.

Project ‘Women in Green and Beyond’ started as a thesis project at IVS. I wanted to take up something meaningful through which I could make an impact. Although there are many layers to this project that one needs to process while going through it, the underlying objective was to recognise the ever-growing self-belief and strength of will and character of Pakistani women. Even after my thesis was over, I kept developing it as it was really close to my heart. The beauty of this project is that it kept evolving with time and so did my own perspective as a photographer.

It is a visual narrative and documents my journey into the world of Pakistan’s women’s cricket team. I think women in sports are breaking stereotypes and I see these women as heroes who not only dared to live their own dreams but also empowered the next generation of girls to pursue their dreams.

My vision for this project is to take it to international forums and through my book, I hope to change perceptions of women’s capabilities not only in the field of cricket but also across different sports and disciplines in Pakistan and beyond.

My unique skillset sets me apart from others in two ways: my business degree and experience at LUMS equips me with the right tools and values to have a meticulous approach and professional attitude towards my projects, and my artistic instincts drive my passion and creativity. For that, I will always be grateful to LUMS.”
