Functional Nanomaterials

Functional Nanomaterials

Our interdisciplinary research group on functional nanomaterials is developing novel strategies to synthesize size and shape-controlled metal, metal oxide and semiconductor nanoparticles/nanoclusters based on chemical and biological principles. In order to control their surface chemistry, we are also working, in collaboration with national/international collaborators, on the synthesis of specialized organic ligands to develop their interaction and subsequent conjugation to various drugs, biomolecules (proteins and DNA etc.), cells and microorganisms by exploiting covalent and non-covalent interactions. In addition, the functional groups at the nanoparticles surface also help to trigger their self-assembly into organized nanostructured materials with interesting chemical and physical properties. Previously we have reported several novel protocols for the synthesis of size-controlled metal nanoparticles which have been used as building blocks to develop a variety of nanostructured materials with controlled nanoscale features (Fig. 1) for applications in optics, bio-sensing, nano-electronics, catalysis, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, fuel cells, water oxidation for hydrogen production and solar cells. We are now developing new strategies to further control the surface chemistry and assembly of nanoparticles into functionalized nanostructured materials for various applications including bacteria detection, multidrug resistance, water oxidation, drug delivery, bio-imaging, environmental monitoring and remediation, catalysis and renewable energy technologies.
