LUMS Inaugurates its Centre for Water Informatics & Technology

The inaugural workshop for the Centre for Water Informatics and Technology (WIT) was held on Friday, January 22, 2016 at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). The workshop titled Smart Water Management: Challenges and Opportunities for Pakistan was attended by globally renowned academics and practitioners, including James Wescoat from Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT); Sally Benson from Stanford University; Bakshal Lashari from Mehran University of Engineering and Technology; Arif Nadeem, Former Secretary Irrigation and Agriculture; Khalid Mohtadullah from Global Water Partnership, and Abubakr Muhammad, LUMS Professor and the newly formed Centre’s Director.

The workshop included a keynote address by Khalid Mohtadullah, who presented an overview of Pakistan’s water challenges, as well as the role that this scarce resource played in Pakistan’s economy. Mr. Mohtadullah stressed the need for improving water efficiency, stating that the link between water and economy should be a reason for the stakeholders to pay heed to addressing critical water challenges.
