The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), in its commitment to excellence in teaching and top quality research, participated in the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan’s call for research proposals under the National Research Productivity for University (NRPU) 2016. The University submitted a total of 39 proposals, out of which 29 proposals crossed initial screening for the peer-review process. LUMS won 25 research grants placing the University at 3rd position in the Punjab and 1st in Lahore in terms of the number of grants won. This is definitely no small feat.

“For our faculty size, this is a tremendous achievement and attests to the high quality research being carried out in all areas at Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering,” commented Dr. Shahid Masud, Dean SBASSE.

The awards were successfully won by 6 departments at SBASSE. From among the 6 departments at the School, the Department of Chemistry had the largest number of research proposals accepted and that was nine. The department also secured the highest acceptance rate of 100 percent. Two faculty members including Dr. Rahman Shah Zaib Saleem and Dr. Muhammad Saeed obtained two grants each. Meanwhile, the Department of Electrical Engineering submitted 14 proposals and obtained 7 grants, while the Department of Biology obtained 4 grants. The Department of Physics obtained 2 out of 4 that were submitted while the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics both obtained 1 grant each.

These awards stand as a testament to the School’s research acumen, excellent research-active faculty, and modern infrastructure that includes state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories. Meanwhile, the research awards under the NRPU are HEC’s effort to avoid the brain drain of able creative researchers from the country.
