Monday, April 23, 2018

Lahore University of Management Sciences Model United Nations Society (LUMUN) is now officially affiliated with United Nations Pakistan. On April 18, 2018, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between LUMS Model UN Society and United Nations Pakistan at LUMS. The MoU was signed by Mr. Neil Buhne (UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Pakistan), Prof. Dr. S. Sohail H. Naqvi (Vice Chancellor LUMS) and Ambassador Shahryar Khan (Patron, LUMUN Society and LUMS Faculty member).

The MoU signifies the joint aspirations of LUMUN and UN Pakistan to develop a strategic partnership that would open avenues for the youth of the country to play a greater role in bringing about tangible and concrete positive changes in the region. This is the first time ever that a Model UN Society in Pakistan has entered into an official partnership with United Nations.

The areas of cooperation include the LUMUN Social Responsibility Programme, the Annual LUMUN Conference (endorsement, promotion and participation of the UN Team at the conference), career advising information sessions at LUMS and the resolutions passed at the UN Conference will be submitted to the United Nations.

The Model United Nations Society, more commonly referred to as LUMUN, was founded in 2002. Since its inception, LUMUN has been the pioneer in the arena of Model United Nations (MUN) in Pakistan. It hosted the first ever Model United Nations Conference in Pakistan in 2003. Since its commencement, LUMUN has expanded and explored several different platforms as a society. Not only has it grown as a conference stimulating 11 committees (of the United Nations and specialised agencies both) but it has been immensely successful on numerous other fronts such as co-hosting the Eurasia MUN Conference held annually in the University of Passau, Germany and has been doing so for the past six years. Eurasia serves as the unification of the two continents of Europe and Asia and allows for greater international and intercultural interaction.

In the words of LUMUN’s Patron, Ambassador Shahryar Khan, “LUMUN students are the flag-bearers of Pakistan in the international arena, making Pakistan and LUMS proud.” Each year LUMUN sends a delegation to the WorldMUN Conference (the most coveted MUN Conference in the world) and to MUNTR (held in Antalya, Turkey).
