Wednesday, April 19, 2017

The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has always encouraged and promoted the growth of students with not only providing an environment that is intellectually engaging but also allowing students to physically reach new heights. Recently, the Office of Sports, Wellness and Recreation launched an initiative for female students to partake in sports. LUMS currently has a total of eight sports that encourages female students to participate. The eight sports consist of Cricket, Football, Table Tennis, Badminton, Squash, Volleyball, Basketball and Tennis.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. S. Sohail H. Naqvi encourages female students to get into sports. This is evident when he presented Tehrema Islam a squash kit, who plays squash on a national level and is currently ranked number 1 at LUMS. Tehrema is currently participating in the Squash Premier League; a national level squash event. The female students have expressed their gratitude to the Vice Chancellor for promoting women playing sports.

Keeping in view of LUMS’ vision, the Sports Administration organises one of its marquee event every year in November called Women’s League. The event attracts participants from all over Pakistan. The latest iteration of the event in 2016, hosted around 400 participants and all eight sports were played. A similar event at LUMS, such as the Girls Trio Cup is also an event that encourages female students to participate in sports.

LUMS has given special attention to the female student body to participate in sports and plans to develop female athletes and promote them on a national level. Tehrema Islam is a prime example of this initiative.

With a little more effort, LUMS plans to take this initiative to new heights.
