Tuesday, August 14, 2018

Today, as Pakistan celebrates another year of its establishment, its heroes, overcoming obstacles, its numerous prospects and triumphs, the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) also celebrated Pakistan’s creation. As an institution that strives hard to contribute to Pakistan’s success in every possible way, LUMS celebrated the country’s 71st anniversary with patriotic spirit and much enthusiasm.

Independence Day celebrations at LUMS commenced with a moment of silence, followed by a flag hoisting ceremony. As the national anthem played, the attendees sang along with great zeal. Congregational prayers for the country's prosperity were said. A large number of LUMS faculty, students and staff attended the event.

Afterwards, Acting Vice Chancellor LUMS, Dr. Shahid Masud in an inspiring and captivating speech said, “It is very important to remember the sacrifices that our forefathers made. This day is not just for us, but for our future generations so that they know why Pakistan was made. We all need to play our part for the success of this country.”

Congratulating fellow community members on the occasion, Dr. Masud paid tribute to the visionary leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and also recounted the sacrifices of the people during the freedom struggle. “Just be vigilant with your work, and that’s the greatest service that you can do for this great country of ours. We are all one, and we need to support each other,” said Dr. Masud.

Dr. Masud’s speech was followed by a passionate address by Aleena Khan, Senior Officer Academic Affairs at Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering. Her narration of a conversation between a father and daughter about the history, culture and future of Pakistan, left the audience feeling emotional about their homeland. This was followed with a fiery speech by Malik Imran Abbas, Administrative Assistant at the Suleman Dawood School of Business, recalling the message and words of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, which truly inspired the gathering.

The talent of the LUMS community was on full display as staff members, Uzma Baig and Khizar Tahseen took the stage to sing a soulful melody. This beautiful performance was followed by performances from Nazish Riaz from Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences, students from the Music Society of LUMS, Daniyal Ahmed (Class of 2021) and Abdul Raffey Tariq (Class of 2021). The performances concluded with a rendition of ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ by staff members, Khizar Tahseen and Ahsan Tanveer Sheikh.

The ceremony concluded with a photograph of the attendees and a cake-cutting ceremony to commemorate the 71st Independence Day celebrations at LUMS.
