Afghan Delegation Visits LUMS

Wednesday, September 27, 2017

An eleven-member delegation from Afghanistan, headed by Deputy Minister for Finance and Administration and Ministry of Higher Education, visited Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) on Wednesday, September 27, 2017. The aim of the visit was to explore the educational opportunities at the universities in Pakistan and more particularly at LUMS.

The guests were met by Prof. Dr. S. Sohail H. Naqvi, Vice Chancellor, LUMS and Dr. Kamran Asdar Ali, Dean, Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Mr. Amir Altaf, Assistant Manager, Marketing and Communications, LUMS, briefed the delegation about the University, its five schools and the programmes it offers. The presentation was followed by a general discussion on potential partnerships and collaborative opportunities between the University and the Government of Afghanistan. The discussion further highlighted the educational opportunities and scholarships for Afghan students at LUMS.

“This visit to Pakistan has been a very fruitful and meaningful one, both for Afghanistan and Pakistan since we have explored various exchange opportunities both for faculty and students that will enhance the quality of education in the region,” commented Dr. Mohammad Naim Azimi, Vice Chancellor, Kabul University, Afghanistan.

Dr. Naqvi invited the guests to send students from their country to participate at the University’s events. The delegation was later taken to the Regional Research Products Showcasing Event being held at the LUMS campus as part of a series of events to celebrate 15 years of the Higher Education Commission in Pakistan.

This delegation is a continuation of LUMS commitment towards opening its doors to talented students across the border and part of the initiative that comes as a result of a Memorandum of Understanding signed on February 2015 between LUMS and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to establish the Afghanistan Scholarship Programme (ASP), which was announced by H.E. President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani during his first visit to Pakistan.

Afghanistan Scholarship Programme (ASP) is an exclusive scholarship for talented Afghan students to study at LUMS in its undergraduate and graduate programmes. The ASP scholarships will only be offered to Afghan students, who are admitted on purely merit basis.
