The Electrical Engineering (EE) Department at LUMS, the largest at SBASSE, started in 2008 by offering a very rigorous and modernised undergraduate programme which is accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council. Today, the Department has about 400 undergraduate students and 14+ full-time faculty members. The first batch of undergraduate students graduated in June 2012. EE department had reached critical mass in research active full-time faculty and established research clusters in all important areas of EE. In 2012, the department started offering new MS and PhD programmes; the previously offered programme in Computer Engineering has phased out but is covered under the larger umbrella of Electrical Engineering.
The graduate programmes in Electrical Engineering give students both a strong foundation and specialisation in three important areas of electrical engineering: Communication and Networks, Embedded Systems and Electronics, and Signal and Image Processing. Moreover, there is adequate opportunity to work with faculty and take courses in other important topics for which course streams are not being offered currently. These include control systems, robotics, electromagnetic, optics and energy systems. Students are also strongly encouraged to collaborate with other disciplines at SBASSE such as Physics, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics and Chemistry.
The department hosts a growing research active full-time faculty with 22 PhDs from the world’s top institutes. The vision of EE Department is to ‘To become internationally recognized regional leaders in electrical engineering research and education, and to serve society through innovation, indigenous solutions, and development of valuable human resource’. EE faculty and students have published over 250 high quality research papers in the past three years with grants won in access of 250 million PKR. Faculty members have also close research collaborations with several top academic institutes of the world; hosted professors and students from institutes within Pakistan and abroad and organised workshops, and seminars both locally and at the international level.
The PhD Electrical Engineering programme offers following specialization areas:
- Signal and image processing
- Electronics and Embedded Systems
- Photonics and Semiconductor Devices
- RF and Micro electronics
- Electrical Power and Energy Systems
- Systems, Control & Robotics
- Communication Systems
- Networks
The Department of EE has 6 PhD graduates with 3 working in Pakistan as faculty members and 3 moving abroad for postdoctoral research positions.
