BA (Honours) English

Overview

The BA (Honours) English program offers students individualized access to excellent teaching on Greek, British, American and world Anglophone literatures with a view to training students in methods of contextual reading, critical thinking and writing. Students receive grounding in canonical texts such as those by Aeschylus, Sophocles, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and George Eliot; are immersed in modernist works by James Joyce, George Orwell, Virginia Woolf, Harold Pinter, Thomas Stearns Eliot; and become well-versed in contemporary global writing by Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Toni Morrison, Maxine Hong Kingston, Naguib Mahfouz, Amitav Ghosh and Margaret Atwood.

The program puts particular emphasis on the historical, social and political conditions surrounding literary production and reception. The courses draw upon a broad range of methodologies and theoretical approaches, such as postcolonialism, feminism, Marxism, post-structuralism, ecocriticism and adaptation studies to mention just a few. By honing skills in critical thinking and rhetorical analysis, the English major produces broadly educated and multifaceted graduates. Students are asked not just to grapple with the range of meanings and moments present in poetry, novels, plays, films, young adult fiction, creative writing and popular culture, but also to produce compelling writing of their own. The craft of research, scholastic writing and knowledge of the great intellectual debates on literary criticism are distinguishing features of the English major. The program uses literary and visual discourse to encourage sustained engagement with issues of power, positionality, ethics and agency in local and transnational contexts.

Our students acquire multiple valuable skills such as communication, analysis, synthesis, problem-solving, and evaluation which apply to numerous professional fields. Our graduates have pursued careers in government, journalism, communications, arts, teaching, and administration. Additionally many of them have embarked upon higher studies in creative writing, social sciences and humanities doctoral programs.

Structure

REQUIREMENTS: 52 CREDIT HOURS (13 COURSES) 

A student doing a major in History is expected to complete 13 courses in the discipline. Students can achieve this objective through a combination of core and elective courses. The 52 credit hours is spread out as follows:

Major Core Courses: 8 Credit Hours (2 courses)

Major Elective Courses: 44 Credit Hours (11 courses) 

In addition to the two compulsory courses, English majors are required to complete eleven elective courses chosen from the list below. Of these eleven electives at least four should be at 300 or 400 level. Courses offered as electives can vary. The list presented here is not exhaustive and is enriched, as new faculty members join or existing faculty develops new courses.  English majors will also have the option of completing a Senior Project which is equivalent  to two courses (8 credit hours). Students may not take a Senior Project to fulfil the 300/400 level elective requirement.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria for Fall 2020 Admissions

Applicants must meet the minimum eligibility criteria in order to be considered for admission to the Undergraduate Programme. Meeting this criteria does not guarantee admission to the Undergraduate programme. Students are selected for admission to LUMS Undergraduate Programmes based on the following factors:

  1. Academic Background
  2. Performance in the Admission Test
  3. Completed and submitted application form and supporting documents by the stipulated deadline
  4. Interview (if called)

LUMS is committed to admitting the best academic students who have the potential to contribute to the learning environment at LUMS and to contribute and bring change to their communities. Consequently, LUMS considers academic achievements alongside other aspects of a candidate’s application.

Each successful applicant is made an offer for entry into a particular School at LUMS. Applicants for each School are selected on the basis of programme requirements of that particular School. Applicants should carefully choose the School(s) they apply to, and take into consideration their interests, motivations, academic strengths, and future career paths.

Admission in a specific school is based on merit and the availability of seats. Decisions on the admission of applicants are final.

 

 

Academic Requirements for Fall 2020 Admissions

The University is keen to attract students who are not only academically competent but also have the potential to contribute to the learning environment of LUMS. Following are the minimum academic requirements for applicants applying to the Undergraduate Programme:

Applicants with complete Higher-Secondary Degree +

Applicants who have successfully completed FA/ICS/ICOM/FSc/A’ Levels/High School Diploma or International Baccalaureate (IB) are eligible to apply for admission if they fulfill one of the following academic qualifications:

  • Successful completion of Matric with 70% marks or above & FA with 65% marks or above/FSc/ ICS/ICOM with 70% marks or above.
  • O’ Levels results (in at least 18 subjects) with an average grade of at least ‘B’ in all subjects attempted; and A’ Levels (in at least three (3) full credit A Levels subjects) with an 2average of 2 Bs and 1 C grade across best three subjects such as there should be no grade less than an E. No credit will be given for Advanced Subsidiary subject(s), for the A Level General Paper, or for an A Level grade less than an E;
  • American High School Diploma (HSD) with 70% or above/Grade point average of B or above
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) with at least 28 out of 45 points
  • Combination of the above
  • Any other equivalent qualification (minimum acceptable scores will be determined by the Admissions Committee)

If shortlisted for admission, applicants will be given a conditional offer. To join LUMS in Fall, applicants must subsequently meet all the stipulated conditions specified by the Admissions Committee by August 2020.

Note:

  • Candidates who have registered or taken the exam of minimum three full credit A Level subjects and do not meet the minimum grades requirement (specified above) must improve their grades in order to be eligible for admission. A Levels exams are held in November and June. To be eligible for admission in 2020, applicants must improve their A Level grades in October /November 2019. Such applicants planning to improve their grades by taking June 2020 exams are not eligible for the Fall 2020 session.
  • Candidates who have already completed their Intermediate level degree (FA/ FSc/ ICS/ I.COM/ High School Diploma/ IB etc.) and do not meet the minimum marks/ grades requirement must improve their marks/ grades by October/ November 2019 in order to be eligible for Fall 2020 session.

Applicants admitted to LUMS and subsequently require HEC attestation of their UG degree must meet the conditions stipulated by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan to get their Undergraduate degree attested. Details are available at the following link:

Applicants with incomplete Higher-Secondary Degree +

Applicants who have not registered or taken the final exams of their FA/ICS/ICOM/FSc/A’ Levels (in at least three full credit A Level subjects)/High School Diploma or International Baccalaureate (IB) as yet and are expecting their final results by August 2020 are eligible to apply for admission if they fulfill one of the following academic qualifications:

  •   Successful completion of Matric with at least 70% marks or above and FA (Part-1) with 65% marks or above/FSc (Part-1)/ICS (Part-1)/ICOM (Part-1) with 70% marks or above;
  •  O’ Levels results (in at least 18 subjects) with an average grade of at least ‘B’ in all subjects attempted;
  •  American High School Diploma (HSD) (first year) with 70% or above/Grade point average of B or above;
  •  International Baccalaureate (IB) (first year) at least 28 out of 45 points;
  •   Combination of the above;

If shortlisted for admission, applicants will be given a conditional offer. To join LUMS in Fall, along with other requirements specified by the Admissions Committee; applicants must subsequently meet one of the following academic conditions by August 2020:

  • Successful completion of FA (65% marks or above)/FSc/ICS/ICOM (70% marks or above)
  • A’ Levels (in at least three (3) full credit A Levels subjects) with an 2average of 2 Bs and 1 C grade across best three subjects such as there should be no grade less than an E. No credit will be given for Advanced Subsidiary subject(s), for the A Level General Paper, or for an A Level grade less than an E;
  • American High School Diploma (minimum required grades for the 12th Grade HSD will be decided by the Admissions Committee)
  •  International Baccalaureate at least 28 out of 45 points

Major Preference(s) +

Students may apply for admission to multiple schools through a single application. Applicants are required to mention their major preference(s) for BS Programme of SBASSE & BA/BSc.(Honours) Programme of MGSHSS & SDSB through the LUMS Online Admission Application form.

Students are admitted to a specific school from the beginning of the programme and are not assigned a major at the time of admission except those admitted to the BA-LL.B Programme in SAHSOL. Admission in a specific school is based on merit and the availability of seats.

Allocation of a preferred major cannot be guaranteed at the time of admission. Allocation of a major will be done according to the school’s policy and mainly determined by the students’ preference(s), their academic performance at LUMS and, in the case of MGSHSS, the capacity constraint in the subject area.

Students may request for a change in their programme/school at the end of first year at LUMS subject to academic performance and availability of space. However, such requests will be considered on a case to case basis by the concerned department.

 

  • Applicants who are admitted to, and join the LUMS UG programme having an assessed high need of financial assistance will be considered for the refund of paid SAT (with Essay)/ ACT (with Essay) registration fee of one attempt.

Admission Test Requirement for Fall 2020 Admissions 

Applicants applying to the Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) and/or Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities & Social Sciences (MGSHSS) are required  to take One (1) of the following tests in order to be considered for Fall 2020 admission:
 
  • SAT (with Essay): or
  • ACT (with Essay)

  • Applicants taking SAT (with Essay) on or before December 7, 2019 and not planning to retake it in March 2020 will be considered for the First Round Offers.

Important Note

  1. The Essay component of the SAT and ACT is mandatory for the Fall 2020 applications. SAT/ ACT taken without Essay will not be considered for evaluation.
  2. SAT (with Essay) taken after March 2020 will not be considered for Fall 2020 session.
  3. SAT (with Essay) taken before March 2018 will not be considered for Fall 2020 admissions.
  4. ACT (with Essay) taken after April 2020 will not be considered for Fall 2020 session.
  5. ACT (with Essay) taken before April 2018 will not be considered for Fall 2020 admissions.
  6. While registering for SAT, applicants must use the same name which is mentioned on the LUMS Admission application and other academic credentials. Using a different name may prevent your scores from matching the rest of your application in our database.
  7. Applicants are required to report test scores of all attempts through an online application and must submit a copy of score report(s) to the University. Best score of a single attempt (SAT (with Essay)/ ACT (with Essay)) reported through the online application will be considered for application evaluation.
  8. Applicants who join the LUMS UG Programme and have an assessed high financial need will have their SAT (with Essay)/ ACT (with Essay) registration fee refunded for one test attempt.

Supporting Documents Requirement for Fall 2020 Admissions

Applicants must submit complete online application form on or before January 30, 2020; 5:00 pm (Pakistan Standard Time).

Payment Procedure

Local & Overseas Applicants: After the successful submission of the online application form through the LUMS Online account on or before the application submission deadline, applicants will be able to print a system generated Application Processing Fee payment voucher. International Applicants: Applicants can make a payment for the Application Processing Fee through a Bank Draft drawn in favour of Lahore University of Management Sciences.

Proof of Payment

Local & Overseas Applicants: A stamped copy of the payment voucher or a confirmation email of an online banking transaction constitutes proof of payment. Applicants are required to send a copy of payment proof along with all other required supporting documents in ONE package on or before the stipulated deadline.

International Applicants: Applicants are required to send original Bank Draft along with all other supporting documents as ONE package on or before the stipulated deadline.

Applicants must print and paste the “Mailing label” on the envelope before sending it to the LUMS Office of Admissions. Applications or documents received after the stipulated deadline will not be processed.

Q. What are the minimum requirements for diploma holders (DAE)?

Q. Does it affect a student's chance to get into LUMS if he/ she has appeared privately over a regular student?

No, applicants are evaluated on their academic grades regardless of the fact whether someone has taken the final exam through a school/college or privately.

Q. Is it possible to transfer credits from another university to LUMS?

Yes, LUMS accepts transfer students from accredited institutions at the undergraduate level. Applicants interested in transfer to the LUMS undergraduate programmes should be enrolled in an undergraduate programme in an HEC recognised institution and should have completed one year or expected to complete one year before joining as a full time student. Transfer is offered twice a year before the Fall and Spring semesters respectively.

Q. May students who are admitted defer enrollment to another year?

No, attending the first semester at LUMS is compulsory and deferment is not an option for undergraduates.

Q. When do application decisions become available?

All admission decisions taken by the University are final. During admission evaluation process, some applicants are admitted, some are placed on a waiting list and the remaining applicants are denied admission. Acceptances are offered between April to July. For this reason, your admission decision may arrive at a different time from a friend or classmate.

Q. Is there a separate application form for the SDSB, MGSHSS, SBASSE and SAHSOL?

No, by default the LUMS online application system allows you to apply for the SDSB, MGSHSS, SBASSE and SAHSOL simultaneously.

Q. Can I apply to more than one school i.e. SDSB/SBASSE/MGSHSS/SAHSOL simultaneously?

Yes, by default the LUMS online application system allows you to simultaneously apply for the SDSB, MGSHSS, SBASSE and SAHSOL. Applicants may choose to apply for admission into any TWO schools (SDSB, MGSHSS, SBASSE and SAHSOL) at LUMS.

Q. How can I give my preferences for the SDSB, MGSHSS, SBASSE and SAHSOL through a common application form?

Applicants can mention their major preference(s) for BS Programme of SBASSE, BA/BSc. (Honours) Programme of SDSB, MGSHSS and BA-LL.B of SAHSOL through the online admission application form.

Applications are evaluated according to the preferences mentioned by applicants in this section. Based on the evaluation of each school, applicants are offered the highest preference they qualify for. This means that if an applicant qualifies for more than one school, one is sent an offer from the school of his highest qualified preference. Therefore, it is highly suggested to select school preferences very carefully.

Q. Can I still apply for admission if I have taken A' level retakes?

Yes, an applicant can apply for admission if he/ she has appeared in retakes of November 2019, for the application of year 2020.

Q. Can I submit the retakes results after the submission of the application?

Applicants appearing for the November 2019 retakes must check the result awaiting option in the online application. Applicants must inform Admissions Office about the estimated time period in which the result of any retake exam will be announced.

Q. I have not yet received confirmation email of my online application submission. What should I do?

You should recheck the completion and proper submission of your application form.

Q. Do I need to get an equivalence certificate from IBCC?

Candidates who have either completed or are in the last year of completion of their education which does not lead to Matric/FA/ICS/ICOM/FSc. will be required to get an equivalence certificate from the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC), Islamabad, Pakistan. For further information please contact:

Q. Should the documents (transcripts/results) be attested?

Applicants must provide attested copies of original documents issued officially. Attestation of these documents is mandatory by concerned authority (School/College).

Q. Can Admissions Office return my application documents to me?

Documents sent to the Admissions Office cannot be returned as they are for administrative purposes. Please make sure to keep a copy for your own use before sending the documents to our office.

Q. Do I have to send my transcript translated if it is not in English?

Yes, academic records from international universities if not in English must be accompanied by an official English translation along with other supporting documents

Q. How many "Teacher Evaluations" may I submit?

Minimum two Teacher Evaluations are required.

Q. Who should my recommendations be from?

The recommendation form(s) should be from teacher(s) of your current or last institute. Recommendations from school/college counselor(s) are not acceptable.

Q. Can Freshmen students begin studies at LUMS during the spring semester?

No, admissions to LUMS takes place once a year and freshmen are admitted to the Fall semester only.

Q. May I request for the application fee refund?

No, after the application submission, the application fee becomes non-refundable.

Q. Is there a waitlist?

Since the number of students who accept our first round of admission offers vary each year, a small number of applicants stay on our waitlist and in case space becomes available after the first round, students on the waitlist are offered a place in the second round.

Q. How many applicants are placed on the waitlist?

The number of candidates placed on the waitlist fluctuates from year to year, depending on the size and quality of the applicant pool.

Q. Are there any specific quotas in admission?

There are no quotas.

Q. Do I need to take an entrance test for admission to the SDSB/MGSHSS/SAHSOL Programme?

The SAT (with Essay) or ACT (with essay) is mandatory for all applicants applying to the Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB), Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities & Social Sciences (MGSHSS), Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL). Q. Do I need to take an entrance test for admission to the SBASSE Programme?

All applicants applying to the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) undergraduate programmes are required to take the following two (2) admission tests in order to be considered for Fall 2020 admission. 

  1. SAT (with Essay) OR ACT (with Essay); and
  2. LUMS UG SBASSE Subject Test OR SAT Subject Test (in at least 3 of the 4 SAT subject tests) listed below:

The SBASSE Admission Test for admission to the Fall 2020 semester will be held ONLY ONCE on February 16, 2020.

Q. I have taken the old version of the SAT I. Will you accept old SAT I?

No, the old version of SAT I is not acceptable.

Q. I have taken SAT (with Essay)/SAT II/ACT (with Essay) more than once, what score will be considered for the evaluation?

Best score of a single attempt reported through the online application will be considered for application evaluation.

Q. How can I get information about LUMS SBASSE Subject Test?

In addition to SAT (with Essay)/ ACT (with Essay), subject knowledge in the area of Biology, Physics, Advanced Mathematics & Chemistry will also be evaluated through this test. Questions are designed to explore knowledge and skills acquired over a period of time. The test is designed to compare candidates with different academic backgrounds.

Difficulty Level: Admission Test is designed to determine the intellectual abilities of test takers. Questions will be at a difficulty level appropriate for students in the final year of A’ Levels/FSc./IB/HSD. They are typically Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), similar to the pattern used in SAT. LUMS SBASSE Subject Test is approximately two (2) hours long. Calculators are not allowed during Admission Test.

LUMS reserves the right to use any test pattern that best meets its admission’s objectives. Instead of preparing for the test, we recommend getting a deep knowledge of fundamental principles and focusing on a good understanding of your school subjects.

The SBASSE Subject Test Registration can be done through the LUMS online application system at: http://admissions.lums.edu.pk on or before January 30, 2020, 5:00 pm (Pakistan Standard Time).

Note: The SBASSE Admission Test for admission to the Fall 2020 semester will be held ONLY ONCE on February 16, 2020.

After the successful submission of the online application form through the LUMS Online account on or before the application submission deadline, applicants will be able to print a system generated Application Processing and LUMS Test Registration (if applicable) Fee payment voucher. Q. By which date should applicants expect their Test Registration cards to be delivered?

Test Registration Cards will not be mailed. Test cards will be available within the application in printable form starting February 10, 2020.

Q. I have submitted my online application & all the required documents on time, what if I am unable to view my Test Registration Card?

Test cards will be available within the application in printable form starting February 10, 2020. If any applicant is unable to view his/her Test Registration Card despite completing all the requirements then he/she can write to us at helpdeskao@lums.edu.pk

Q. Does LUMS accept ACT (with Essay) scores?

Yes, LUMS accepts results of the ACT (with Essay).

Q. Can I change my Test Centre?

Test Centre can only be changed in special circumstances (provided with a reason) and the applicant must inform the Admissions Office latest by February 5, 2020. No request later than the specified date will be entertained.

Q. Is it possible to apply after the deadline? What is the late application policy?

Applications cannot be submitted after the deadline. There is no late application policy.

Q. How do I inform about a change in the online application?

It is highly recommended to fill out the application form carefully. Changes cannot be made after the submission of online application. In sheer need an applicant can send the updated information to helpdeskao@lums.edu.pk with the specific header "Change in Application Form".

Q. May I appeal my admission decision or ask to have the decision explained?

The admission process is a well deliberated and thorough process. Each year we receive a large number of outstanding applications. Unfortunately, not all of them qualify because of the limited number of available seats. The decision regarding admission is final.

If your application is unsuccessful you will also receive a letter informing you of this. Due to the volume of applications the University receive, it is not possible to provide feedback on unsuccessful applications.

Q. What is a mailing label?

A mailing label has especially been designed for your convenience as it bears not only your name, tracking/application ID, schools applied to but also a complete address for correspondence. After the successful submission of your application form you will be able to print the mailing label. The LUMS Admissions Office will only accept a package that contains the “Mailing Label”.

Q. Can I apply for both streams i.e. Humanities & Social Sciences (SHSS) and Economics of MGSHSS?

No, you can only apply for one stream either Humanities & Social Sciences (SHSS) or Economics.

Important Points

  • The above breakdown of fee structure is for Year 1 of the 4 Year BA (Honours) English programme.
  • Fees are payable by semester according to the schedule given in the Annual Fee bill.
  • Through an amendment in the Income Tax Ordinance 2001 by Finance Act 2013, advance tax (under section 236 I) shall be collected @ 5% on the entire amount of fee (if Student Payable exceeds PKR 200,000 per annum excluding the amount refundable).
  • Advance tax paid on fee is adjustable at the time of filing of Income tax return. LUMS will issue Advance Tax Certificate in this regard at year-end.
  • University fees are usually announced once each year, for the following academic year. However, tuition and fees are subject to change without notice.
