Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has signed an MOU with Pink Ribbon Foundation to raise awareness about breast cancer in Pakistan. The MOU was signed between the Vice Chancellor LUMS, Prof. Dr. S. Sohail H. Naqvi and the CEO Pink Ribbon Foundation, Mr. Omer Aftab at a ceremony attended by Office of Student Affairs representatives, Dr. Furrukh A. Khan, Associate Professor, LUMS Department of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Pink Ribbon Foundation team.
Cancer has assumed grave proportions, with currently with one of the highest incidence rates in the world. LUMS will also help channel student societies to take on assignments and projects in association with Pink Ribbon to design campaigns and spread the word amongst its community by having events on campus, and helping to raise funds for this humanitarian effort. The LUMS Community will also facilitate research, strategy development and communication processes for greater message reach and understanding, wherever possible.
CEO of Pink Ribbon Foundation, Mr. Omer Aftab spoke at the occasion and said, “Pink Ribbon is running a very extensive youth awareness programme because Pakistan has the highest rate of breast cancer in Asia. One of the objectives of the youth awareness programme is to reach young girls and through them to their mothers and the elderly women the families.”
Mr. Aftab also shared that Pink Ribbon Foundation is setting up Pakistan’s first dedicated breast cancer hospital, for which they are running a fundraising campaign with the help of the youth.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Naqvi said “LUMS is a residential university with a large female population and it is important to know about breast cancer and take the necessary steps that can prolong your life. The LUMS Community Service Society will take the lead by reaching out to the entire LUMS community.”
