LUMS CSO Conducts ‘Successful Career: is it an Oxymoron?’ Session

Wednesday, October 19, 2016

The Career Services Office (CSO) organised a grooming session titled ‘Successful Career: is it an oxymoron?’ on Friday, October 14, 2016 at LUMS. Mr. Salman Wassay, a LUMS alumnus and presently the CEO of Couch Potato conducted the session.

What does success mean? How is it measured differently by different individuals? What is the job market situation in Pakistan with respect to sectors like telecom, banking, FMCGs and private equity and asset management? Mr. Wassay started by elaborating these topics and further discussed the three types of careers that can be pursued including having a job, owning a business, and the progression from having a job to owning a business. He also explained how rapidly local companies are transforming their traditional culture and approaches according to modern standards. He pinpointed that not only do startups bring an exponential growth to Pakistan’s economy but also provide incredible entrepreneurial opportunities to graduates who are interested to start their own ventures.

Mr. Wassay strongly advised the students to choose their first job wisely as it determines their career path. He discouraged the trend of job hopping and advised the students to stay for at least 2-3 years in an organisation before moving to another one.

The students enthusiastically participated throughout the session, raising questions and attentively listening to Mr. Wassay’s answers.
