This World Breast Cancer Day, the LUMS Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and student society, FemSoc in collaboration with Chughtai Lab invited popular women's right activist and artist, Muniba Mazari as guest speaker at a Breast Cancer Awareness session. The session was organised to observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October and to raise awareness about the disease, as well as inform people to take the required steps to formulate a plan to detect it in its early stages and encourage others to do the same.
The awareness session, which was very well attended by LUMS students as well as members of the faculty and staff, included an interactive session by Dr. Zunaira Rathore, consultant pathologist at Chughtai Lab about Breast Cancer. Ms. Muniba Mazari, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Chughtai Lab also addressed the session. She said, “Breast Cancer is basically a topic that hardly talked about by both men and women. It is because of this societal taboo that many women keep on suffering for a long period of time until the cancer reaches a stage where it becomes harder to treat than it would initially have been.
Speaking about the #ThinkPink campaign, she commented, "It isn't just about combatting the disease but also breaking the taboo of talking about diseases and ailments of all kinds. The more we talk about these things, the easier they will be to treat."
She also commended LUMS and its contributions towards the eradication of breast cancer. "LUMS is doing a great job by providing such a big platform to raise awareness about Breast Cancer,’ she remarked. ‘I’m very happy and thankful to the institute for organising an art competition to raise awareness about the disease because Art is the best way to spread the word."
