SIR Consultants (Pvt.) Ltd., a major actuarial consulting firm in Pakistan whose major clientele is spread across the GCC region, held an information session on ‘The Actuarial Profession’ on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at LUMS. The organisation’s consultants work on various insurance markets, while operating in traditional as well as non-traditional roles. As a result, they developing a diverse professional skillset.
Asad Vallani, Manager, SIR Consultants began the session with a brief introduction about himself, and shared that he has been associated with the actuarial professional for ten years. He welcomed the participants and asked them about their knowledge of the actuarial profession and its job prospects. Mr. Vallani explained that after qualifying for the actuarial exams, the skills acquired are of a broad range, transferable, and there is also a huge demand for people in this profession.
Mr. Vallani encouraged the attendees to take up courses that would eventually help them in the actuarial exams as well as build their skillsets for the actuarial profession.
Following this, Mr. Vallani introduced his colleague Qadeeruddin Ahmed, Manager, SIR Consultants who is also a LUMS alumnus. Mr. Ahmed talked about the pathways of becoming a member of either the US based centre, Society of Actuaries or the UK based, Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. He further shared that the compensation progression is according to work experience gained over time and highlighted how this is such a rewarding profession since the knowledge that is gained results in providing solutions for clients that have an impact on the public. Summer internship opportunities at SIR Consultants were also discussed. The event ended with an interactive Question and Answers session.
