A well known organisation of the country, ICI Pakistan Limited has come forward to support a scholarship grant for one female undergraduate student at LUMS. To finalise the commitment, an MOU was signed between Mr. Suhail A. Khan, VP Polyester and Soda Ash Business, ICI Pakistan and Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Vice Chancellor LUMS on April 5, 2019.
Representing ICI Pakistan at the event were Faiza Savul, Talent Acquisition Manager, and Commercial Trainee Officers, Lalarukh Murtaza and Jawwad Siddiqui. LUMS faculty also joined the Office of Advancement team to meet the ICI delegation, including Dr. Shahid Masud, Dean Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), Dr. Basit Yameen, Associate Professor SBASSE and Dr. Adnan Khan, Dean Office of Student Affairs.
Dr. Ahmad spoke to the gathering about the research and development efforts that LUMS is currently working on, as well as the possible collaborations and synergies between the LUMS research centres and ICI Pakistan Limited. Mr. Khan endorsed this view and spoke about the current needs of the organisation and the research related associations underway related to R&D and training. It was mutually decided that the two stakeholders would work towards a possible collaboration.
Dr. Shahid Masud, Dean SBASSE, spoke to the gathering about the schools housed at LUMS and explained that most of the projects are not confined to one particular department, but multiple ones. He shared information about the current research projects underway at the Centre of Water and Informatics Technology and the Energy Centre. Representatives of both organisations agreed to meet again to explore possible opportunities for synergies.
Dr. Adnan Khan spoke about how LUMS strives to nurture the talented youth of Pakistan through various initiatives. He shared that currently, 35% of the students at LUMS are receiving financial aid, which goes to show that the University is undertaking tremendous efforts to promote diversity and inclusion. He also discussed opportunities related to social work with ICI Pakistan for students of LUMS and elaborated on the efforts of the current students in community service.
The meeting ended with the ICI team expressing their willingness to be involved in counselling activities with the chosen student, as well as internship opportunities that could be provided to the individual. They also agreed to explore research related avenues.
