US-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W) at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) Jamshoro, held their Project Completion Seminar on October 29. The Seminar was on ‘Closed-loop Secondary-level Canal Monitoring for Equitable and Reliable Distribution of Water,' and was presented by Dr. Abubakr Muhammad, Director Centre for Water Informatics and Technology, and Dr. Abdul Latif Qureshi, Professor at USPCAS-W, who were Principal Investigators of this research study.
Engr. Abdul Basit Soomro, Chairman Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority, attended the Seminar as the guest of honour. Dr. Bakhshal Khan Lashari, Project Director USPCAS-W, and Dr. Rasool Bux Mahar, Deputy Director USPCAS-W, were speakers at the event.
The project successfully deployed smart irrigation grid for three distributaries (minors) fed canal command in the Sindh Province and created a database for storing real time data. An end-user application was also developed for visualisation and control of water levels and flows in head, middle and tail of the selected distributaries.
This project was completed with the collaboration of USPCAS-W MUET Jamshoro, and Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA), Nara Canal AWB, with technical support from University of Utah, USA and LUMS University, Lahore. The project study will help to monitor and manage the canals in order to achieve the sustainable development goal of tackling water use and scarcity.
