The Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), in collaboration with LUMS Emergency Medical Services (EMS), organised an information session on life-saving tools and methods including first aid, disaster response, and action regarding climate change, with an emphasis on the role of youth in addressing these humanitarian issues.
Dr. Saeed Ilahi, National Chairman of PRCS addressed the audience and elaborated on the history and mission of the Red Crescent and urged those present to wholeheartedly participate in its diversifying initiatives. He stressed the role of youth and gave the students a vision of what could be accomplished with the untapped energy of university students across Pakistan. His talk centred around highlighting prime the position students hold as agents of change and encouraged them to confidently embrace the responsibility. Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Vice Chancellor LUMS praised the efforts of the Red Crescent leadership in addressing the various humanitarian crises that the country faces and planting the seeds of change and development across Pakistan.
Red Crescent staff reached out to the audience during the session and informed them of the ways in which they could participate in the PRCS’s various volunteer programmes targeted towards students, particularly with regard to first aid training and courses. They also demonstrated how these programmes would allow participants to help those in need as well as grow as responsible citizens.
The session concluded with an award ceremony, where honours were presented to both the Red Crescent and LUMS leadership. Dr. Adnan Khan, Dean of Student Affairs, made a short concluding address and emphasised the shared humanitarian values between LUMS and PRCS, and expressed his hope that the two organisations would seek further collaborations in the future in order to encourage students to go beyond their classrooms and give back to their communities.
