The Department of Mathematics at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering, and the LUMS Students Math Society (LSMS) jointly organised the first 'Three Minute Thesis Competition – Math' on November 25, 2019. The competition required participants to present the breadth and significance of their graduate research to a non-specialist audience within three minutes.
Twenty three students presented their research to a very engaged and interested audience. PhD student, Muhammad Adnan Anwar won the competition for presenting his thesis on the numerical simulation technique and analysis of fluid structure interaction (FSI) problems; a multiphysics phenomenon. Fareeha Ambar stood second while Aftab Ali and Sumayya Mohsin shared the third prize.
On the importance of competitions such as the Three Minute Thesis Competition, Dr. Ali Ashher Zaidi, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, SBASSE, said, "Since solving modern world problems require an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach, it is important for mathematicians to be able to communicate effectively with non-mathematicians. This competition will be helpful in inculcating this skill amongst our students."
