The Department of Electrical Engineering at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) held a talk on the topic ‘Will AI take over humans? An example from the music industry” on October 22, 2019. Dr. Sajid Siraj, Associate Professor at the Centre for Decision Research, University of Leeds, UK was the speaker for this event.
Dr. Siraj’s research interests lie in evidence-based decision-making. He likes to explore the theory and applications of multi-criteria decision analysis wherein decision makers often struggle to optimise multiple objectives, with some objectives often being in conflict with each other. He is also interested in the design and development of software systems based on multi-criteria decision analysis.
Dr. Siraj is member of various international research societies including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, International Society on MCDM, Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, and the OR Society of the UK. One of his software tools is called Priority Estimation Tool (PriEsT), which is available as an open-source and has been used by many non-profit organisations to facilitate them in structured decision making.
The talk at SBASSE focused on the project between University of Leeds and a music label company to develop machine-learning algorithms, that can help identify musical talent by crawling information on the web. The session also discussed other interesting projects done by Leeds University Business School in collaboration with the music industry. The students and faculty interested in the practical applications of machine-learning and artificial intelligence, mainly from management science, computer science and electrical engineering, attended and gained valuable insight from Dr. Siraj’s distinguished career.
