Muhammad Hussnain Riaz, MS Electrical Engineering student at Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has successfully completed the 2018 Summer School in Future Energy Information Networks, conducted jointly by Simula Metropolitan Center for Digital Engineering, Norway, University of Oslo, Norway, and Technical University of Berlin, Germany held on September 3-7, 2018 at Simula Research Laboratory, Fornebu, Norway.

The annual summer school is tailored for postgraduate students (MSc and early PhD-level students). This summer school selected 24 students from across the world to provide the opportunity to the students for cutting edge research with the world's leading researchers in their fields gathered from various backgrounds, mindsets, knowledge, and statistics. The programme allowed forging deep ties with like-minded, creative, hardworking people from over 15 countries around the world. In the end, the Director of Simula Research Laboratory awarded the completion certificate to all the participating students.

Mr. Hussnain credits LUMS to encourage him to apply for the Summer School Programme as this Programme is exactly similar to his core studies/research. He said, “I am greatly honoured to be a part of LUMS.” He further talked about his experience at the summer school, “The International Summer School pushed me beyond my own standards of excellence. A carefully thought-out mix of trips on the weekends gave me an all-inclusive experience of Europe. Besides all of these wonderful experiences, the students and their insightful ideas always broadened my perspectives.”

The lectures at the summer school covered the contemporary topics in smart energy systems, such as smart power grid, smart buildings, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and communication technologies and network security in smart energy systems. The Summer School helped to learn the latest methods and techniques for this field and to enhance the research in this industry that will be beneficial for the Country and University, both. Mr. Hussnain said that his future objective is to fulfil the operational goals by implementing the contemporary optimisation techniques for eliminating the power outages and electricity problems, which Pakistan is facing today.

Mr. Hussnain has published ten research papers in international magazines; he has conducted research with professors in Pakistan, Australia, USA , Germany, France, Spain, Turkey and China. Most of his research papers target future energy networks, renewable energy, and smart grid networks.
