The Department of Electrical Engineering at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) held the 11th Teaching the Teachers workshop on Basic Circuit Theory from August 19-23, 2019. The workshop was attended by 90 participants, including faculty members from different institutes all across the country.
The five-day sessions focused on circuit theory – which is considered to be the root of electrical engineering. The workshop was designed for teachers of circuit theory courses who had some experience in teaching the subject. The workshop covered selected topics that are not always taught effectively. Once students enter practice or continue on to higher studies, these weaknesses become difficult to remedy.
Circuit theory underpins power engineering, signal processing, feedback controls, and electronic circuits. While classically it has spanned linear, time-invariant circuits very thoroughly, a modern presentation must introduce key ideas of nonlinearity, and periodic time variance, at the start of an undergraduate electrical engineering degree course.
The workshop was conducted by Professor Asad Ali Abidi. He received a BSc degree in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College, London in 1976, and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982. He worked at Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill until 1985, and then joined the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles where he is the Distinguished Chancellor’s Professor of Electrical Engineering.
The sessions were a success, and participants appreciated the learnings, skills, tools and techniques they gained that will improve their teaching skills.
