SBASSE Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Students Visit ICI-Soda Ash Plant

Thursday, December 27, 2018

Students of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) visited ICI-Soda Ash Plant on December 7, 2018 to get first-hand exposure and insight to the chemical manufacturing industry. The students and faculty were cordially welcomed upon their arrival at ICI-Soda Ash Plant. They visited different sections of the plant and were briefed about various products and processes.

The Soda Ash Plant located in Khewra is one of the largest manufactures of washing soda (Sodium Carbonate) and baking soda (Sodium Hydrogencarbonate). These chemicals find applications in glass, pulp and paper, soaps/detergents and iron and steel manufacturing.

“The trip to ICI Soda Ash industry was quite informative indeed, elucidating the finest details of this industrial process for the production of chemicals we are trained to synthesis at a small-scale in our laboratory teaching,” said Anira Waqas, an MS student while expressing her views about the trip.

“The spirit behind the tour was to provide first-hand observation of the application of “classroom” chemistry to the real world. Such type of industrial visits also help our students know about various internship and career opportunities that the industry offers and they can better plan their future accordingly,” added Dr. Ali Rauf, who accompanied the students on the tour.
