On Wednesday, November 20, 2019, the 13th Session of ‘Leaders at LUMS’ welcomed Ms. Sima Kamil, President and CEO of United Bank Limited (UBL). Moderated by Mr. Adeel Hashmi, the session drew a large gathering of students, staff, faculty and other guests.
Ms. Kamil shared valuable insights from her exceptional journey and said that to be successful at any job, one needs to be passionate about what they do. She also spoke about the challenges she faced in her career, saying, “Sometimes you fail when you choose a wrong person for a role. I have gone through this a couple of times and it is painful. But then you start to learn that you need to think a lot more before you choose a person for a role.”
She further explained, “During interviews, we look for people who are excited, have the passion to succeed and the ability to think. I would be happy to take graduates who are engineers or history graduates, if they have the drive to learn.”
The effect of environmentally harmful lifestyles and behaviour was also discussed at the session. Ms. Kamil explained how the use of plastic is harming the environment. Attendees were also able to ask Ms. Kamil questions about the banking industry which she responded to in detail.
Vice Chancellor LUMS, Dr. Arshad Ahmad was also present at the event and praised Ms. Kamil for inspiring the audience by sharing how she overcame obstacles in her personal and professional life. He said that to succeed, it is essential to adopt values such as hard work and integrity and Ms. Kamil is an example one must learn from.
The session ended with Dr. Ahmad presenting a commemorative shield to Ms. Kamil.
