On Saturday, July 14, 2018 the LUMS Community lost a very precious member of its family. The tragic news of the accidental death of fellow Luminite from the Class of 2016, Fatima Qayyum (May 6, 1995-July 14, 2018) left all those who knew her in deep shock and grief.
During her time at LUMS Fatima remained an active member of the student body through her leadership roles in LUMUN, LUMS Entrepreneur Society, PhotoLUMS and as an Orientation Coordinator where she touched the lives of many in-coming LUMS students. Many of those students remember her as a friendly, welcoming person who immediately made them feel at home. The girl with tremendous leadership qualities, humility and affection, is fondly remembered by several of her MGSHSS and SDSB professors as a gem of a person, including Dr. Lukas Albert, Dr. Maryam Wasif, and colleague, Quratulain Babur. A true embodiment of courage, and determination, Fatima’s dedication was reflected in her discreet work ethics and sympathetic nature.
The Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, Campus Climate Unit, and the Student Council have made arrangements to hold a memorial in remembrance of Fatima’s legacy of courage, honesty, and generosity, on Friday, July 20, 2018. A special Dua followed by a Quran Khwani after Friday Jummah prayers will be held at the LUMS Majid in presence of her family members. Later, a small tree planting ceremony will take place outside the Academic Block, on the REDC side at 4:00 pm in Fatima’s honour.
The tree-planting will be commenced by her husband, Raees Iqbal, also a LUMS graduate from the Class of 2015. Raees and Fatima met at LUMS during their Orientation Week and had been together ever since. Fatima is remembered as a dedicated Lumnite, loving daughter, caring sister, a true friend and a supportive wife by her husband and family.
The LUMS Community extends its deepest condolences to her family.
