The LUMUN Social Responsibility Programme led a Summer Internship in affiliation with the CARE Foundation which is renowned for its work to educate and empower the Pakistani youth, and the Cecil and Iris Chaudary Foundation, an NGO that pursues the protection, development and representation of the minorities within Pakistan.
The programme was led by Wajahat Afzal and Zoha Waqar who undertook 7 Government Schools and one Christian school in the distant districts of the city:
1. Qila Lakshman Singh (Boys Branch)
2. Qila Lakshman Singh (Girls Branch)
3. Mominpura, Karim Park
4. Fategarh
5. Harbanspura
6. Kot Khwaja Saeed
7. Singhpura
8. Youhanabad (Christian Community)
Through the programme LUMUN was able to recruit a team of 100 students from schools and colleges throughout the city, with ambitions aimed towards promoting education and giving back to the society, as Interns for the program. These 100 students taught in these schools for a course of 4 weeks (11 July – 6 August, 2016). The interns carried out different activities and followed an elaborate curriculum that would develop each child’s confidence, creativity, and critical thinking – exposing them to the side of liberal arts and studies. The children being taught were from grade 7 and above and gave a remarkably favourable response, with polished skills and keener attitude towards learning and developing skills.
The Programme also included Teacher Training in City District Government High school Harbanspura, which aimed to assist government school teachers in advanced teaching techniques from well-known educational institutes, and by providing them the perspective of experienced students with what they felt would have been the most effective teaching method and which extracurricular fields required more attention from teachers at the high school stage.
The student-run society also took up the new initiative of approaching the Christian communities within the city to adorn the white in our flag. By affiliating themselves with the Cecil and Iris Chaudary Foundation, it started the summer camp for a small school in Youhanabad where they taught 80 Christian children for 3 weeks. It proved to be an eye opening experience for the interns as it exposed them to the reality and present situation of our nation and its people.
A total of almost 350 children were taught, and 45 teachers were trained during this programme.
