Undergraduate students, namely, Fatima Bibi, an Accounting and Finance major and Awais Khalid, an Anthropology and Sociology major at the Lahore University of Management Sciences have successfully qualified for an exchange semester at the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS), Waseda University, Tokyo Japan. This exercise comes as part of the LUMS-Waseda Student Exchange Program funded by Mitsubishi Corporation Japan. The programme offers an opportunity to study at the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS), Waseda University in Japan for the Fall Semester 2017-18.
The final selections have been made by way of a comprehensive review process, based on a combination of academic achievement and the demonstrated potential to receive, absorb and add value to the LUMS community through international exchange programmes. Other factors taken into account include leadership qualities, community service, extracurricular activities, personal characteristics, attributes and talents. Also noted is the ability to benefit from and contribute to the diverse and challenging learning environment at partner universities.
Interest shown by the students for this programme has been growing consistently. This year, the competition for the two positions was particularly rigorous, with well over 100 applications. The selection process was executed by the Office of Student Affairs, and all applications were carefully assessed on the basis of a written statement of purpose and one-on-one discussions with students shortlisted for interviews by an assigned panel that consisted of Yasser Hashmi, Dean of Student Affairs and Dr. Kashif Zaheer Malik, faculty member at the Department of Economics and Mazhar Mohsin Chinoy, Director, Office of Student Affairs.
