The family of the late, world renowned Urdu fiction writer, Intizar Husain has donated his entire book collection to the LUMS Gad & Birgit Rausing Library. Hussain’s valuable book collection, compiled over decades, comprises major genres of literature by writers from across the world.
This prized collection will enrich the Urdu literature assemblage at the library and will be very useful for students of Urdu literature in specific. The LUMS library management has planned to develop a “Gosha-e-Intizar” in the writer’s memory.
Born in Dibai in Bulandshahr district (India), Hussain is frequently referred to as the best known Pakistani writer after Manto. He was conferred upon the ‘Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters’ by the French Ambassador to Pakistan, Philppe Thiebaud in September 2014. Hussain was among the 10 finalists for the Man Booker International Prize for fiction in 2013.
He wrote short stories, novels and poetry in Urdu, and also literary columns for Dawn and Daily Express. His widely acknowledged body of work includes books like Gali Koochay, Kankari, Din Aur Dastan, Shehr-i-afsos, Kachhuay, Khaimay Say Door, Khali Pinjra, Morenama and Sheharzad Kay Naam. These books have played a key role in shaping contemporary Urdu literature.
