Photodetector is an important optoelectronic device used in a variety of applications such as in optical communications, digital cameras, and, radiation detection, etc. The researchers at the nanoelectronic cluster at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), LUMS have recently published their work on novel graphene based photodetectors suitable for very high sensitive applications. The sensitivity of a photodetector is measured as the amount of electrical output (in the form of current or voltage) that it generates for a given power of incoming photons. Graphene, which is one of the most widely researched nanomaterials, has recently been demonstrated as a channel in a phototransistor that shows a very strong conductivity modulation when interacted with light. The physical understanding of this behaviour has puzzled the research community with several inconclusive theories reported in the literature.
