The Department of Electrical Engineering (EE), Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) hosted the National ICT R&D Fund workshop on “Communication Science & Systems” from August 15-19, 2016.
This was the 7th workshop in the series of ‘Teaching the Teachers Workshops’ and represents a decade old tradition of such seminars. The workshop was conducted by Prof. Dr. Asad Ali Abidi, Distinguished Chancellor's Professor at the Electrical Engineering Department, University of California, Los Angeles. Prof. Dr. Asad Ali Abidi is also the founding Dean of SBASSE, LUMS and is one of the most eminent Professors of Pakistani origin in the world.
The workshop taught communication science and systems to faculty members and practitioners in a rich, multi-disciplinary fashion that emphasised design-oriented theory beyond the conventional textbooks. The workshop also enriched the teaching methods and practices of several fundamental electrical engineering concepts.
“It was an excellent opportunity to learn from a truly inspirational instructor who has deep knowledge of the field and is renowned for the development of many of the radio circuits and architectures that enable today’s mobile devices.” says Faran Awais, an EE PhD students from LUMS.
Besides the LUMS community, more than 120 external participants from academia and industry attended the workshop. The workshop concluded with a scrumptious lunch at the LUMS Executive Dining Hall.
“This workshop is intense, intellectually demanding, even physically taxing as the attendees sit through six hours a day. It is my hope that this will be a seminal experience for the attendees, serving as a turning point in how they think of fundamental concepts”, commented Dr. Abidi on the importance of the workshop.
