Google for Publishers - Educational Session Held at LUMS

Officials from Google Singapore visited LUMS on Monday, September 5, 2016 to talk about ‘Google for Publishers’. The session was targeted towards Computer Science students of LUMS to educate them about development through online content generation. Google has publisher solutions to help publishers, bloggers, content writers, web designers, app developers and similar online users, earn money from their online content. The product experts spoke about Google's suit of monetisation products and showed them ways to work with AdSense and AdMob. They also shared an overview on the programme policies. 

Google AdSense helps the users easily make money from a user’s website so as a small publisher, AdSense offers a simple and free way to turn people’s passion into profit. By placing targeted ads next to the projected content, a user will automatically earn money when the ads are seen or clicked. Google AdMob supports users to earn revenue from in-app ads. With a variety of ad formats including video, native, interstitials and banners, AdMob gives the user lots of choices to make money from Apps while providing the best user experience possible.

The educational information session was hosted by Waqas Burney and Ahmad Nawaz who are the Strategic Online Partnerships Managers for Web and Apps, respectively. Mr. Burney has product expertise in Adsense, Ad Exchange, and DoubleClick for Pubishers. While, Mr. Nawaz is known for work on AdMob, Firebase and Play. Waqas Burney also happens to be a LUMS graduate from the MBA batch of 2011. They were accompanied by Cymone Ding, who is the Programmes Specialist & University Recruiter for Google Singapore.

The session started with an Introduction to Online Publishing and Introduction of Google's Publishing Products (web & apps). After the overview on product policies was given, the audience was presented with a few case studies specific to publishing. Special information was shared by Cymone to encourage students to apply for the Google recruitment cycle. After the orientation session, the team shared their best practices and opened the floor for questions and answers. The session was attended by a large number of student body from almost all disciplines at LUMS, and generated a healthy conversation about Google products and prospects with Google.

The Google team also honoured the LUMS Senior Year student - Marium Rasheed who won the Google Anita Borg Institute Scholarship (ABI) this year. The scholarship is granted to women in computing, recognising their extraordinary accomplishments and potential in the field. ABI brings women in computing together to discover new ideas, and each recipient receives a financial award for the academic year.

During the visit, the Google team met with Prof. Dr. S. Sohail H. Naqvi, the Vice Chancellor of LUMS, faculty of the Computer Science department and the Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) professors. It was a highly successful event which was well received by the audience and the Google Team showed interest in making further visits to LUMS. The SDSB External Relations Office is happy to connect LUMS community further with Google.
