Qurrat-Ul-Ain Nadeem, a graduate of BS Electrical Engineering 2013, Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), and PhD candidate at the Electrical Engineering Department of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), has won the prestigious Marconi Society’s Paul Baron Young Scholar Award for the year 2018. She has been selected for her significant and innovative contributions towards the development of full dimension (FD) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communication, which is a key technology outlined in the current industrial standards for 5G cellular systems. Ms. Nadeem will receive this award at the Marconi Society’s annual awards dinner in Bologna, Italy, on October 2, 2018.
About the Award:
The Marconi Society’s Paul Baran Young Scholar Award recognises outstanding young scientists and engineers who have demonstrated exceptional capabilities and potential. It is the most prestigious award for researchers in telecommunications under the age of 28. The Society honours the winners for their innovative work in the spirit of the courage and wisdom exemplified by the Nobel Prize winner and inventor of the radio, Guglielmo Marconi. Young Scholar candidates are nominated by their academic advisors. Winners are selected by an international panel comprised of engineers from leading universities and companies and receive a $5000 prize plus expenses to attend the annual awards event. More importantly, the winner joins the super elite group of Marconi Young Scholars, who are considered to be the best young researchers in the fields of telecommunications and networking. They get international recognition with immediate global credibility being given to their work and enjoy inspirational networking with industry luminaries and a fast-rising cohort. Most of the previous recipients of this award were PhD students in the top universities of North America and Europe. Biography and Research Focus:
Qurrat-Ul-Ain Nadeem received a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from SBASSE in 2013 and an MS degree in Electrical Engineering from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Thuwal, Saudi Arabia in 2015. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Electrical Engineering Department at KAUST, working under the supervision of Professor Mohamed-Slim Alouini. Ms. Nadeem’s research focus has been on applications of random matrix theory (RMT) in wireless communications, including channel modelling, elevation beamforming and performance analysis of linear precoders/detectors. She is particularly credited for her seminal work on full dimension multiple-input-multiple-output (FD-MIMO) systems, which is a key technology outlined in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for 5G cellular networks.
