Bushra Iqbal, a PhD student, and a member of Catalyst Design Group at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), has published a research article in Chemistry-A European Journal. The Chemistry-A European Journal is a leading scientific journal that publishes research from all areas of chemistry. Ms. Iqbal’s paper presents the structural modulation of porous crystalline solids, known as MOFs, for speeding up chemical processes.
Sharing details of her work, Bushra said, “Highly ordered arrangement of constituents in solids, known as MOFs, creates internal channels rendering high internal surface area to these materials. MOFs, therefore, have potential applications in the storage of gases, water harvesting from air, drug delivery, and filtration etc. Such solids might also be used as catalysts to speed up the production of energy and chemicals. In this paper, we showed that by selectively displacing one metal (Iron) with another (Cobalt) without harming the structure of the MOFs, highly active catalysts can be generated. As an example, we have shown the potential of such catalysts in the generation of hydrogen fuel from water and for the synthesis of agrochemicals.”
Dr. Muhammad Zaheer, the principle investigator of Catalyst Design Group and an Assistant Professor at SBASSE, thinks that this current work extends the application profile of MOFs and would help the designing of highly active and reusable catalysts for numerous applications.
Ms. Iqbal’s article appeared as a hot article in the latest issue of the journal. Hot Papers are chosen by the journal’s editors for their importance in a rapidly evolving field of high current interest.
