LUMS alumna, Aalene Mahum Aneeq, BSc 2015, Politics & Economics, has received the Ertegun Graduate Scholarship, from the University of Oxford. Under the Ertegun Scholarship Programme, 'the world’s top graduate students in the humanities are brought together with one another in a unique setting that fosters dialogue across academic disciplines, across cultures and across generations.' The Ertegun Scholars have the opportunity to study cost-free at Oxford, and they can exclusively use the 'Mica and Ahmet Ertegun House,' a building in the heart of Oxford dedicated to study and research. Ertegun Scholars have access to a variety of lectures, seminars, concerts and other activities especially designed for them.
Aalene is studying for an MSt in Modern South Asian Studies. Her dissertation focuses on post-partition refugee resettlement in Punjab, Pakistan. Through her research, she aims to question the new dynamics that were developing between refugees, locals and the nascent state in Punjab, Pakistan; and the implications they had for the making of Pakistani citizens.
During Aalene’s undergraduate programme at LUMS, she studied Politics and Economics as a joint major along with a minor in History. “I am deeply humbled to have received the Ertegun Graduate Scholarship for my Masters. Without a doubt, LUMS played a crucial role in allowing me to develop myself intellectually. Some of the most brilliant humanities courses I attended at LUMS inspired me to go into this field which is still so terribly neglected in Pakistan. A lot of instructors helped me exceptionally along the way, especially Dr. Ali Raza and Dr. Ali Qasmi, whose painstaking guidance kept me on track,” said Aalene.
