The month of November was an exciting one for LUMS alumni around the world as they engaged in a variety of enjoyable get-togethers. From casual meet-ups at cafes and a cosy pot-luck gathering, to a competitive game of volleyball on a sandy beach, our alumni have had a whirl of a good time.
CSS HI-TEA
As per past practice, the senior batch of LUMS CSS officers joined hands with the Office of Alumni Relations and invited their juniors, the latest batch of officers, for a welcoming hi-tea at the Executive Dining Hall at LUMS on Saturday, November 4, 2017. The idea behind this get-together was to welcome the newest group of CSS officers into the CSS alumni fold and introduce them to the support and guidance of their alma mater association. The alumni had a fun-filled evening bonding over their shared CSS experiences, and they ended the meet-up with the resolve to stay in touch and support each other when needed.
BOSTON
The alumni community in Boston spent an enjoyable evening on Saturday, November 11, 2017 when they held a potluck get-together at the Harvard University campus.
It was largely due to the efforts of the LUMS Ambassador for the Boston alumni community, Bilal Malik, MBA 2005, that this meet-up came to be. The alumni brought a variety of delicious finger foods and snacks and used the opportunity to engage with the many fellow Luminites living in the area. More than anything, this get-together was an opportunity for the alumni in the area to discuss the formation of an official Boston Alumni Chapter, and discuss ideas about establishing a leadership base for the Chapter in order to move the alumni community forward. The general sentiment at the gathering was to move forward with the inception of such a Chapter, and the alumni had a wonderful time suggesting next steps and future actions.
MALAYSIA & SINGAPORE
The alumni communities in Malaysia and Singapore got a much-appreciated taste of home on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 and Saturday, November 18, 2017 respectively when they received a visit from LUMS faculty in their city.
One of our esteemed faculty members, Wasif Tanveer, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering, visited Malaysia and Singapore and attended an alumni get-together in each country in order to engage with LUMS alumni. Not only did the alumni have an excellent time catching up with each other but also appreciated the chance to network with an important member of the LUMS community and learn about all the latest developments taking place at LUMS.
The evening also marked an important occasion as the reins of the Malaysia Alumni Chapter were handed over from the previous President, Uzma Hussain, BSc 2004, to the new President, Umbreen Fatima, BSc 2010.
Uzma has led the Malaysia alumni community with a wonderful sense of team spirit in the past two years. In the spirit of moving forward, the Office of Alumni Relations welcomes Umbreen to this engaged leadership role amongst the alumni community, and we look forward to collaborating with her in the future.
UAE
The LUMS Alumni Team wins the volleyball championship! It was a moment of pride for the entire LUMS alumni community on Saturday, November 18, 2017 when the LUMS team won the volleyball championship at the Joint Alumni Beach Olympics in Dubai, UAE. After consecutive wins against the London Business School, Chicago Booth, and IBA, the LUMS team beat the London Business School in the semi-finals and INSEAD in the finals. Alumni on the team who helped achieve this victory included Omair Homaey, Mohsin Aikal, Saman Jawed, Syed Jaleel, Mudassir Nazir, and Shahzad Bashir.
Aside from this brilliant win, the LUMS team were also the overall runners-up in the Joint Alumni Beach Olympics 2017, second only to the INSEAD team, who took the first position, and ahead of the teams from IBA, NYU, and more. Well Done Team LUMS!
UK
Our alumni in the UK embraced the holiday season with a festive spirit when they arranged a fun-filled reunion on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at the Winter Wonderland in London, UK. The outing was attended by alumni from a variety of batches ranging from 2005 to 2017, and provided them with a great opportunity to revive old connections and make new friends in the city.
After enjoying an array of attractions at the Winter Wonderland, the alumni went out for an exciting dinner at the Shishawi restaurant. They spent the evening sharing their experiences and memories of university life and discussed the developments that have taken place at LUMS over the last decade. The memorable evening ended with a plan to arrange the next reunion in Spring.
NEW ZEALAND
Celebrations were in the air for the LUMS alumni community in New Zealand when they held their very first alumni meet-up on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at the Pappa Rich Restaurant in Auckland, New Zealand.
An alumnus, Zeeshan Anwar, BSc 2012, who has recently relocated to Auckland, was looking to network with our alumni community in New Zealand and collaborated with the Office of Alumni Relations to initiate this alumni get-together. A variety of alumni attended the casual gathering and were very appreciative of getting the chance to connect with fellow alumni in the city and make a new circle of friends. The alumni enjoyed the opportunity to get acquainted with fellow Luminites and were so happy to meet up. The evening ended with plans to organise another reunion soon.
