About the Seminar
Several viruses enter into the brain causing a number of neurodegenerative disorders including dementia. The viral passage into the brain involves multiple molecular moieties that need to be understood for developing an effective therapeutic agent. Our laboratory developed an in vitro model of the human brain and used this system for deciphering the passage of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) into the central nervous system. In his presentation, Professor Mukhtar will describe his team's research efforts that ultimately led to Phase IV clinical trials for treating HIV-associated dementia.
Biography
Professor Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar received his PhD in Biological Sciences from the Drexel University of Philadelphia, PA, USA in the year 1994. The US government awarded him the Outstanding Scientist (O-1) visa during 1995 - 2006 for conducting research, training students and young scientists, pursuing their careers in medicine and biomedical field in the USA. His teaching was recognised with the outstanding clinical faculty of the year award 2005 from the Thomas Jefferson University of Philadelphia, USA and research contributions reflected in the form of >100 research, review, book chapters, critiques and general articles.
