Faculty Profile

Dr. Ali Jawaid is a physician-scientist with training in both clinical and basic neuroscience. He completed his medical studies from Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan in 2007, and followed it up with clinical/research training in Neurology from Baylor College of Medicine, USA. He then proceeded to complete an MD-PhD in Neuroscience from Switzerland (simultaneous PhD degrees awarded by UZH/ETH International Program in Neuroscience and UZH MD-PhD program). Dr. Ali Jawaid has worked extensively in the fields of memory, dementia, neurodegenerative disorders, neuroepigenetics, neurodevelopmental disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and addiction. He has authored 56 pubmed publications and two book chapters, and has received awards and honors from multiple academic organizations. He has published in Science, Nature Neuroscience, Neuron and Nature Communications, and has a current H-index of 15 (he has 15 papers, which have been cited at least 15 times). He is also the chair of European MD-PhD association, and is a fiction author outside of scientific work. After joining LUMS as a visiting faculty, Dr. Ali Jawaid has embarked on projects related to the effect of TDP-43 protein on neuronal metabolism and its relevance to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)/ frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), role of microRNAs in memory, and epigenetic effects of early life trauma on brain functions (in collaboration with SOS village Pakistan). He also gives seminars on 'Molecular basis of Addiction'.
