Facilities at LUMS

Academic Block

The Academic Block designed by the renowned architect Mr. Habib Fida Ali, is a two-storeyed building, spread over an area of 150,000 sq ft. This red bricked structure comprises semi independent wings assembled around a central courtyard and houses classrooms, auditoriums, discussion rooms, conference rooms, and offices. Currently, the classes for the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences (MGSHSS) and Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) are conducted in the academic block.

Suleman Dawood School of Business Building

The Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) has been moved to an independent building, which is presently under construction. The new building occupies a covered area of 160,000 square ft. and will have the capacity to accommodate 1324 undergraduate and graduate students. This 5-storey building will accommodate 54 faculty offices, 54 discussion rooms, 1 auditorium of 300 seating capacity, 2 auditoriums of 200 seating capacity, 1 computer lab, 12 meeting rooms, 6 case method class rooms, support staff and research assistant offices, student lounges and staff rooms.

School of Science & Engineering Complex

The recently constructed, 5-tiered building, housing the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) stands tall on a covered area of 300,000 sq ft. Presently, the building is partially in use. On completion, it will house 10 teaching labs, 20 research labs, 4 central research labs, 2 support labs, 5 computer rooms, 2 lecture halls of 200 seating capacity each, 4 classrooms of 75 seating capacity each, 100 faculty offices, office space for up to 500 graduate and post-doctoral students, a utility building and 10MW electrical grid station. The building has an adaptable space design that can be changed as requirements develop.

This building is the first of its kind in Pakistan, providing the most modern facilities and following international standards according to which the labs include vibration control and functional safety codes. The wet labs (biology and chemistry) have been provided with special ventilation and exhaust systems.

Gad & Birgit Rausing Library

The Gad & Birgit Rausing library at LUMS offers advanced systems and technologies and a wide array of user empowered services. It has a rich and assorted collection of over 220,000 books and 140,000 electronic books that support scholarly interests and practical research activities, 450 print journal subscriptions, more than 35,000 electronic journals, a collection of 3200 resources including audio and video libraries, 40 CD-ROM databases and campus-wide access to more than 35,000 online journals dating back to 1800s.

The library allows free and secure access to library catalogues, user accounts and campus-wide access to its full text resources through a web interface called iPortal. Through this, members can manage their library accounts and keep tabs on circulation activities including renewals or reservations of circulated items. Another useful service provided by the library is Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) which keeps members updated about new additions to the library collection.

In addition, the library maintains a very informative website http://library.lums.edu.pk/. This is an interactive and user friendly website that uses social software applications like Facebook, Blog, Linked-in, Delicious and Flicker for communicating with library members. A range of access levels are also provided to library resources including online access through mobile phones and Virtual Private Network (VPN). Besides remote access, the library remains operational seven days a week until mid night and is open 24 hours a day during exams.   

Information Systems Technology (IST)

LUMS has always relied on technology-intensive, challenging methods of teaching and learning. Information Systems and Technology (IST) at LUMS is designed to provide a wide-ranging computing environment that would cater to the needs of students, faculty and staff. The LUMS community, on a daily basis, connects to the campus LAN via 3000 access points available across the campus at computing labs, academic units, student hostels, faculty residences and the library. A secure, off-campus, web-based access to on-line course support services such as enrollment, assignments and grades, message boards and e-mail is also provided by IST. The campus network operates on a high-speed fibre backbone with Gigabit uplinks and dedicated high-end servers and switches.

At the six general purpose labs, resources are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and have the capacity to accommodate 300 students. The labs are equipped with high-end workstations, document scanners and high speed laser and line printers. The university also houses a special Java lab with an Ultra Sparc II server and sunray appliances. Email kiosks at the library and the dining block have also been installed by IST to improve access and availability.

The IST also manages an Assistive Technology Lab for visually impaired students. This lab offers users the latest technologies, including text-to-speech computer screen reading, computer magnification, Braille screen display and Braille embossing and printed material conversion to audio and digital formats.

The IST strives to facilitate modern teaching, research and learning methods through high quality services and technological infrastructure while ensuring that all users are sufficiently skilled to make the maximum use of the provided services.

Student Hostels

More than half of the student body at LUMS lives on campus each year. To accommodate them, the University offers quality housing facilities in the form of six male and four female hostels. The girls hostels have a capacity to house 614 students on the basis of double occupancy and the six boys hostel buildings occupy 1204 residents based on double occupancy as well.

The hostel block offers its inhabitants a sociable and secure environment. It also provides important facilities including, kitchens, TV lounges and easy access to dining facilities as well as the LUMS computer network. Laundry services have been outsourced at very economical rates. Students can easily get in touch with the dedicated hostel staff if the need arises and access emergency services including transport facilities.

The Residential College System is also practiced at LUMS with a view to improve student life on campus.

Faculty Housing

The LUMS faculty is offered modern residential facilities on campus in the form of 7 faculty residential blocks providing high quality 1-3 bedroom apartments. The state-of-the-art apartments have a comfortable and spacious architecture and are accessorised with the latest facilities.

Syed Maratab Ali Sports Complex

In an effort to tend to the physical well-being of individuals at LUMS, the university offers an extensive range of modern sports facilities to its students, faculty, staff and alumni. The Syed Maratab Ali Sports Complex at LUMS offers the ideal environment to carry out numerous sporting activities like tennis, squash, gym, football, volleyball, cricket, basketball etc.

The following facilities are present in and around the Sports Complex:

Dining Block

The Pepsi Dining Centre (PDC), which covers an area of 14,000 sq ft., offers a diverse range of food for meals and snacks at very reasonable prices. The first floor of the PDC accommodates food stalls from popular cafes from across the city. Other eating facilities on campus include Khokha (canteen) where edibles and everyday routine stuff are available to the students.

Super Store & ATM

The LUMS Super Store provides easy access to daily provisions including toiletries, snacks and medicines to individuals living on campus. Along with catering to the basic needs of the LUMS community, the super store also has an ATM facility for individuals’ convenience.

Mosque

The campus also has a beautifully designed, community mosque which is open 24 hours a day. Daily sermons are delivered in both Arabic and Urdu. The spacious mosque offers separate prayer facilities for men and women
