Women in Energy – A Panel Discussion

The LUMS Career Services Office in collaboration with Women in Energy (Pakistan) has organised an hour-long talk at LUMS for female students who are interested in pursuing a career in the energy sector.

The session is for both engineering and non-engineering students who wish to learn more about opportunities for women in the energy sector in Pakistan. It will be an interactive session and there will be time for one on one interaction with the panellists at the end of the session.

The session will cover:
1. Introductory presentation on Women in the Energy network
2. Introduction of the Panelists
3. Energy in gender perspective
4. Opportunities for female graduates in the energy sector

The session is aimed at both engineering and non-engineering students who wish to learn more about the opportunities for women in the energy sector in Pakistan. It will be an interactive session and attendees will be able to network with the panellists at the end of the session.

Women in Energy (WIE) is a professional network supporting women working in the field of energy and power in Pakistan. It has over 200 active members, which include professionals working in the field of energy including solar, wind, thermal energy, energy efficiency, urban planning, green buildings, climate change etc. Members include a Managing Director of a Punjab Power Development Board, a Director General of a national regulatory authority, Founder(s) and CEO(s) of local solar companies and Senior Energy Specialists.

Panellists include the following female experts working in the field of energy in Pakistan:

Afifa Jabeen
Director Legal, Punjab Power Development Board

Ms. Jabeen started her career as a commercial lawyer in 2007 with Anwar Kamal Law Associates. She joined PPDB in 2011 as Assistant Manager Legal where she got the opportunity to draft legal agreements for public sector energy projects. Ms. Jabeen has worked on legal transactions of 1,320 MW Sahiwal Coal Power Project, 400 MW QA Solar Project, and 720 MW Karot Hydropower Project. She has helped negotiate fuel supply, energy purchase and water use agreements with concerned authorities and was promoted to the position of Director Legal at PPDB in 2015 for her outstanding work.

Rehma Javed
Senior Executive, Sapphire Renewables

Ms. Javed is currently working as a Senior Executive - Project Development at Sapphire Renewables. An alumnus of Imperial College London and NUST, she is an engineer with a diverse experience of working at a power utility, an energy consultancy, a wind plant developer and an NGO. Ms. Javed has worked on the development of IPP scale wind power projects and the deployment of smart grids in Pakistan. She presented a paper on challenges faced by Women in Engineering at an IEEE TENCON Conference.

Asma Rizwan
Planning Engineer, SkyElectric

Ms. Rizwan is an electrical engineer with more than 5 years of experience in the renewables sector. She is currently working as a planning engineer at SkyElectric. Previously, Ms. Rizwan has worked as lead planning engineer at Reon Energy and as Technical Project Coordinator in Hamid Mukhtar & Co. (Pvt) Ltd. Asma has diversified field experience ranging from designing industrial power factor capacitors to designing commercial and domestic solar solutions. She was given a Spark award by SkyElectric for her outstanding performance.

Sehrish Riaz
Associate Engineer, USAID Sustainable Energy for Pakistan Project

Ms. Riaz has 4 years’ experience in the power sector of Pakistan. She is currently working as Associate Engineer in USAID Sustainable Energy for Pakistan project. Her work includes working with the Ministry of Energy and National Transmission and Dispatch Company to enhance the capacity of the transmission system to absorb higher share of renewable energy in the energy mix.
