About the Speaker

Simon Langan, PhD, has extensive experience in international research for development with over 20 years’ experience as a senior/principal researcher with a strong management background. He currently leads the Water Programme at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Vienna, Austria. Previously he has experience in Africa and Europe.

Dr. Langan holds a doctoral degree in land use and water quality from the University of St. Andrews, UK. His PhD was followed by a three-year post-doctoral fellowship in Imperial College, London, UK. His subsequent project and organisational experience has been with various international organisations and centred on a multi/interdisciplinary approach.

Dr. Langan has an extensive number of publications in peer-reviewed journals, as well as experience in policy-related analyses, including over 120 papers, technical reports, books/chapters and conference proceedings.

His experience in Europe and Africa and more recently at the global scale have generated information to increase knowledge and provide the evidence base to inform policy and practice. An essential element of this is to increase both individual and organisational capacity. Throughout his career, he has won grants and secured funding from regional organisations, international donor projects, as well as from the private sector including the EU 7th Framework, Natural Environment Research Council, National Power, Scottish Environment Protection Agency, USAID, and Canadian Government.
