About the Speaker

Professor Bruce Lawrence (PhD, Yale University, 1972) is professor of Islamic Studies Emeritus at Duke University, where he taught for 40 years until he retired in 2011. His current position, since Fall 2012, is Adjunct Professor in Civilization Studies at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakif University, Istanbul. His nineteen books include translations, monographs, edited and co-edited volumes, and a trade book, The Qur’an – A Biography (Grove/Atlantic, 2006). Sufi Martyrs to Love: The Chishti Brotherhood in South Asia & Beyond (Palgrave Press, 2002) was co-authored with Carl Ernst. His most recent monographs are Who is Allah? (UNC Press, 2015) and The Koran in English: A Biography (Princeton University Press, 2017).
