Shah Hussain lived and wrote in the 16th Century in Lahore, Punjab. Born a low caste weaver, he soon acquired quite a following in the city through the message of love preached through his moving Sufi verses. According to tradition, he is buried near Shalimar Gardens in Lahore with his Hindu lover, the young boy who gave the venerated poet his popular name, Madhu Lal Hussain.
Join us as Naveed Alam reads his translations and interpretations of Shah Hussain's kafis. He will also share his experience of engaging with Hussain's work from a queer perspective.
Naveed Alam is Assistant Professor at the Department of Liberal Arts, Beaconhouse National University. His translation of Shah Hussain was published by Penguin India this year.
