Fulbright Session With Ms. Rita Bruun Akhtar

Mushtaq Ahmad Gumrani School of Humanities and Social Sciences (MGSHSS) in collaboration with CSO has a organised a session with Ms. Rita Bruun Akhtar, the Executive Director of USEFP. She will be discussing various scholarship programs offered by the USEFP in Pakistan. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the session and benefit from Ms. Rita's talk.

Ms. Akhtar is a Fulbright alumna, having researched comparative law in Lahore on a Fulbright-Hays. She is also the Executive Director of USEFP, managing the world’s largest Fulbright Program (in terms of U.S. contribution), the flagship scholarship program of the U.S. Department of State. In 2016, USEFP sent approximately 628 Pakistanis to the U.S. on ten different programs, including 159 in fully funded Fulbright Master’s and PhD programs. 

Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in the mid-1980s. She is an ABD (All But Dissertation) in Political Science from the University of Washington and an alumna of the Berkeley Urdu Language Program in Pakistan (BULPIP).

Ms. Akhtar will be visiting LUMS on Monday, April 10, 2017 at 5 PM to conduct an orientation session on Fulbright and all other scholarship programs being administered by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan. She will be taking questions from students, staff and faculty members who are interested to compete for the USEFP grants. 

The categories for fellowship programs for Pakistani citizens include:

Graduate Students: 

Fulbright PhD and Masters for Graduate students. This award is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and is eligible for students, staff and faculty.

Undergraduate Students: 

Global Undergraduate Exchange Program for Undergraduate students. The program offers cultural/academic exchange through a non-degree program for a semester at a university in the U.S. and is eligible for students.

Fulbright Scholar: 

Fulbright Scholar Program for Pakistani PhD’s who want to undertake collaborative research at the U.S. is eligible for faculty. 

Teachers: 

Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) and Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) Program. These programs are designed to enhance teachers’ expertise in their teaching discipline and provide them with a deeper understanding of best practices in teaching methodologies, lesson planning and the use of technology in teaching; this program is eligible for faculty.

Mid- Career Professionals: 

Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program for accomplished mid-career professionals with demonstrated leadership potential to the United States for a year of graduate-level non-degree academic coursework and professional development activities this program is eligible for faculty and staff.

Working Professionals: 

Journalism, Professional Partnership Program for Public Administration, Community College Initiative (CCI) and Community College Administrator Program. This non-degree program is offered for working professionals in Pakistan and is eligible for staff.
