Biology Talk on Predicting Type-1 Diabetes

Dr. Ahmed Mehdi is a Research Fellow at the Translational Research Institute, the University of Queensland, Australia. Dr. Mehdi has particular expertise in the application of advanced bioinformatic approaches to longitudinal complex data for discovery of biomarkers in autoimmune diseases.

Dr. Mehdi will be giving a talk on the ‘Identification of gene expression signatures to predict type-1 diabetes.’ The talk will be hosted by Dr. Amir Faisal, Associate Professor at the Department of Biology in the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), LUMS.

Abstract

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is the most prevalent chronic childhood disease. Diagnosis often involves hospitalisation with many individuals presenting with hyperglycaemia. A robust gene expression signature defining T1D progression or response to therapy has not been identified. We applied a novel statistical and analytical approach to now identify such a transcriptional signature in high-risk subjects associated with T1D progression. 
In Dr. Mehdi’s recent research publications in the Ann Rheum Dis (IF: 12.3) and  Diabetologia (IF: 6.2), developed method to understand the time-varying nature of features associated with the disease. In another joint first author paper in the Sci Transl Med (IF: 16.8), novel biomarkers were identified in a clinical trial of antigen-specific therapy using immunomodulatory dendritic cells.
