Abstract
Although the current focus within drug discovery is to determine both newer targets and synergistic compounds, the question as to which compound enters the clinic depends entirely on safety and efficacy of the compound within biological models. System biology relates genes, proteins, microbes and metabolites with the aim to describe, understand and predict the complex biology of the disease in relation to both known and novel drugs. Therefore, integrating engineering with medicine my research aims to (i) develop a system biology model of the disease integrating multi-omics data layers for disease prognosis, (ii) apply drug data with the disease model to provide a ‘drug-disease complex’ which may relate current known drugs to determine synergistic combinations for improved personalized therapies, and (iii) develop diagnostic tests.
About the Speaker
Dr. Bilal Wajid completed his BSc Electrical Engineering from University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, Pakistan in 2007 and his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University (TAMU), College Station, TX, USA in 2015. He is currently serving as an Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Electrical Engineering, UET, KSK Campus. He has previously taught at Texas A&M University, CS (TX, USA), Texas A&M International University, Laredo (TX, USA) and Duke University, Durham (North Carolina, USA). His research interests include Application of Engineering in Medicine, Bioinformatics and Cloud Computing.
