12th Teaching the Teachers Workshop on S-parameters: Theory and Uses to Characterise Circuits

Thursday, December 26, 2019 - 9:00am
SBASSE 10-201, LUMS

For its 12th Teaching the Teachers Workshop the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) at LUMS is organising a workshop on ‘S-parameters: Theory and Uses to Characterise Circuits.’

Scattering (“s”) parameters are used in many branches of electrical engineering. At radio and microwave frequencies, they are the exclusive way to characterise circuits. But they are also used at low frequencies, in filter design and in measurements using network analyzers. All electrical engineers should be familiar with the use of s-parameters, even for application at low frequencies. S-parameters give exclusive insights into power flow, although they are equally useful to characterise voltages and currents.

Date: December 26, 2019
Time: 9:00am - 5:00pm
Venue: SBASSE 10-201, LUMS

This one-day workshop will cover the following topics:

• Available power from a source, and a derivation of reflection coefficient from first principles
• Bilinear transformation and the Smith Chart
• Scattering parameters for resistively terminated 2 ports, and N ports
• Examples of uses of the Smith Chart
• Visualisation of s-parameters with signal flow graphs
• Examples of uses of s-parameters and the insights they give on various circuits
• Network analyzer instruments: architectures and method of operation

About the Instructor

Asad Abidi received his BSc degree in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College, London, in 1976, and his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982. He worked at Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, until 1985, and then joined the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles, where he is Distinguished Chancellor’s Professor of Electrical Engineering. Along with his students he has developed many of the radio circuits and architectures that enable today’s mobile devices. Among other awards, Professor Abidi has received the 2008 IEEE Donald O. Pederson Award in Solid-State Circuits and the Best Paper Award from the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits in 2012. The University of California, Berkeley’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences recognised him as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2015. He was elected Fellow of IEEE in 1996, Member of the US National Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences.

Professor Abidi holds the Abdus Salam Chair at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering, LUMS, Lahore.
